Thursday, December 8th, 2011I feel like it’s hard to know how to photograph a teenage boy. Most of the time they don’t want to even do a senior photo, it’s more the parents; so the session is usually a bit awkward and the photos turn out kind of boring. With Ben, our senior shoot has been rescheduled three times because of rain/holidays/last minute practices, and when I woke up to see it pouring down rain AGAIN I fell back into bed with disgust! Laying there my husband and I started talking and decided, we could work with this, so we grabbed our rain boots, some umbrellas and hoped for the best!
We first took him to this garage that I had had my eye on for some time. I knew I wanted to photograph someone in front of it’s crooked door, and who better than a teenage boy! Once we heard the rumbling of thunder we ducked into the local library and decided to try and get some shots in there. We had him pick out some books that he’d read in high school (and elementary) that he really liked, and then we asked him if he minded singing in the rain. He was a good sport and said he got his workout for the day jumping all around. Lastly, we noticed this used instrument store so we got some simple, more portrait style images, in front of their windows. Being a thespian and a musician this photo session totally summed up Ben, and in the end the rain really worked for us!
We shot using a Canon 5D mark ii, with an 85mm 1.8, and a 17-40mm 4.0. We also used a few gels and leaves lying around to add to the look!
